MDU–KUK Collaborative Seminar on Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam Highlights Women’s Legislative Empowerment

Indiknow, Rohtak.  An insightful online seminar on the historic Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, 2023 (Women’s Reservation Bill) was organized on April 14, as a joint initiative of Maharshi Dayanand University (MDU) and Kurukshetra University (KUK).The programme was conducted under the able guidance of Prof. Santosh Nandal, Professor of Economics, MDU Rohtak and State Coordinator of the initiative. Delivering the keynote address, Prof. Sunil Kumar, Department of Sociology, Kurukshetra University, elaborated on the socio-economic implications of the Act.Dr. Priya Sharma (Organising Secretary) played a key role in the effective coordination and smooth conduct of the programme. In her address, Prof. Santosh Nandal remarked, This Act is not merely a tribute to women’s power but a strong foundation for nation-building. She further highlighted that the provision will remain effective for 15 years, with the possibility of extension by Parliament, and emphasized the need for capacity building and leadership development.Prof. Sunil Kumar explained that the Act provides for one-third reservation for women in the Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha, and State Legislative Assemblies covering General, SC, and ST categories, to be implemented after delimitation based on the next Census (post-2026). He noted that women’s representation is expected to increase from around 14% to 33%, making governance more inclusive.The seminar witnessed active participation from academicians and students including Dr. Joginder, Dr. Naveen Malik, Dr. Amita, Chanchal Rani, Dr. Rinkle, Dr. Kulbir Singh, and Manish Bhanwala.The discussions emphasized social justice, economic development, and political inclusion. Participants recommended awareness campaigns and training programmes for effective implementation.The programme concluded with a formal vote of thanks by Dr. Priya Sharma.
