Indiknow, Rohtak .
Imagine... a child of about 3 years old is suffering from thigh pain after falling from his bed. He is undergoing treatment. But at the same time, an iron screw is silently lodged in his windpipe inside his lung. No cough, no choking, no crying. His parents have no clue. This story is not from a movie, but of a little boy, Anant (name changed), living in Narnaul district, Haryana. The credit for defeating this death and saving the child from the jaws of death goes to the doctors of PGIMS, Rohtak, whom people call God on Earth.

Dr. Raman Vadera, Senior Professor of the ENT Department of PGI, provided detailed information about the case and explained that Anant fell from his bed on July 13, 2026. His left thigh bone was broken.  First, a plaster cast was applied at Narnaul Hospital, followed by treatment at a private hospital for 8-9 days. Until July 22nd, the family thought everything was normal. But when the doctors performed a routine chest X-ray before the thigh operation on July 23rd, even the radiologist was shocked. The X-ray clearly showed a metal screw lodged in the lower lobe of the right lung. The family had no recollection of when or how Anant had swallowed it. There were no witnesses, and no symptoms.

The child was immediately referred to PGIMS, Rohtak. A CT scan confirmed that the screw was lodged in the right bronchus intermedius. This was a very rare and dangerous situation for doctors. The screw could have completely blocked the windpipe. Removing the screw without surgery was a challenge, as even the slightest mistake could have cost the child his life. This challenge was accepted by Dr. Raman Vadera, Senior Professor in the ENT Department of PGIMS, and his team. Dr. Vadera performed the operation under general anesthesia using a rigid bronchoscopy technique. In this procedure, a thin telescope was inserted through the throat to locate the screw and remove it safely without making any incisions.

Dr. Raman Vadera stated that the approximately two-hour operation was completely successful. Anant suffered no complications and is now recovering rapidly. Dr. Raman Vadera notes that children over six months old often test everything by putting it in their mouths. Screws, nuts, bolts, coins, batteries, and small toy parts are children's biggest enemies. The most frightening thing is that sometimes, there are no symptoms after aspiration, as in Devansh's case. Dr. Raman Vadera advised that if a child suddenly develops a violent cough, hoarseness of voice, or becomes irritable for no apparent reason, an examination should be conducted immediately. Department Head Dr. Jagat Singh stated that Vice Chancellor Dr. H.K.  Under the leadership of Dr. Agarwal and Director Dr. S.K. Singhal, the hospital boasts modern technology and an expert team, which is why patients from not only Haryana but also neighboring states come here with confidence.

Vice Chancellor Dr. H.K. Agarwal expressed his happiness over this successful operation, stating that PGIMS is the state's largest and most trusted referral center. Patients with the most complex medical conditions from the state and neighboring states come here daily for treatment. Dr. Agarwal stated that as Vice Chancellor, his priority has always been to ensure that patients have access to world-class diagnostics, modern equipment, and a team of expert doctors under one roof. In line with this vision, PGIMS has strengthened all super-specialty services, including trauma, over the past few years. The hospital boasts a 24-hour emergency, ICU, ventilators, modern OT, and diagnostic facilities. Special efforts are also being made to provide free and quality treatment to poor and needy patients under government schemes.

Dr. H.K.  Agarwal said that in rare cases like Devansh's, only timely diagnosis and a skilled team like Dr. Raman Vadera's can save lives. PGIMS's hallmark is its blend of technology with humanity. He urged parents to keep young children away from screws, coins, batteries, and small toy parts, as even a moment's carelessness can be costly.
