Indiknow, Rohtak. World Breastfeeding Week 2026 was inaugurated with great enthusiasm on Saturday at the College of Nursing, Pandit Bhagwat Dayal Sharma University of Health Sciences. The event was held in the OPD of PGIMS. The week will be celebrated from August 1 to 7. The program was presided over by Professor Sunita Kumari, Dean and Principal of the College of Nursing. Dr. Savita Singhal, Dean of Student Welfare, was the chief guest, and Dr. Manjunath, Senior Professor in Charge of the Public Relations Department of PGIMS, was the special guest.
Elaborating on this year's theme, Dr. Savita Singhal said that breastfeeding is not only a child's right but also the foundation of a healthy society. She said that initiating breastfeeding within one hour of birth and providing exclusive breast milk for the first six months is the most effective and cost-effective way to reduce infant mortality and morbidity. Breast milk provides complete nutrition to the baby, boosts immunity, and strengthens the emotional bond between mother and child.
Dr. Savita Singhal urged nursing students to become breastfeeding ambassadors, visiting hospitals and communities to educate mothers and families about proper breastfeeding techniques. She commended the College of Nursing for organizing this program and encouraged them to actively participate in the week-long activities.
Professor of the program, Professor Sunita Kumari, said that Breastfeeding Week is celebrated annually from August 1st to 7th, in collaboration with WHO and UNICEF, since the Innocenti Declaration of 1990. She emphasized the crucial role of nurses in spreading this message.
Dr. Manjunath, Senior Professor in Charge of the Department of Public Relations, stated that breastfeeding can only be promoted through awareness and proper communication. She urged students to spread the right information through social media, health education sessions, and community outreach.
Dr. Manjunatha stated that a poster competition, a health education session, and an awareness talk on the benefits of breastfeeding were organized at the inauguration. The winners of the poster competition were honored with prizes. Dr. Manjunatha stated that B.Sc. and M.Sc. nursing students performed street plays to raise awareness about the importance of immediate breastfeeding and the role of colostrum in developing infant immunity.
Acharya Shakuntala concluded the program with a vote of thanks. She stated that breastfeeding counseling and information will be provided to mothers in various outpatient departments and wards throughout the week.
